Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! PVSD began our 151st year of providing excellence for all on August 29th. We continue to be a destination district due to our commitment of improving the lives of the children in our care. Our whole child approach allows students to excel academically, athletically, artistically, and socially.
We continue to be extremely grateful for our community’s support of Measure C. While planning began last school year, the summer provided an opportunity to implement the first phase of work. Our facilities, maintenance, and operations (FMO), bond manager, purchasing, business office, and technology departments worked tirelessly over the summer to complete close to 100 Measure C projects this summer. Our students and staff returned to new playgrounds, parking lot enhancements, new carpet and tile, a new roof, many roof repairs, new interactive Newline displays, new student and teacher furniture selected by staff, new walkways, new landscaping, and more! Frankly, I am amazed that our little school district was able to do so much for our students and staff in such a short time frame.
A few of our campuses returned to new leadership. Mr. Mark Asher is now the principal of Tierra Linda Elementary School and Mr. Robert Waggoner is the now principal of Dos Caminos Elementary School. We also had two principal vacancies to fill. We are thrilled to have Kelly Hatton join us as principal of Las Colinas Middle School. Dr. Kurt Lowry was selected as the principal of Los Primeros School of Science and Arts.
At the District Office, we also had leadership changes. Sandra Lovaas was selected as the bond manager. We recently hired Laurie Peachey to be PVSD’s new purchasing supervisor. Mike Valdez, who was in the role of interim FMO director for the second half of the school year, was selected as the FMO director. Celeste Perdue was selected as the accounting supervisor. In student services, Stefanie Lawson joined us to serve our early learning and child care families. In my office, Himelda Rubio joined us as executive administrative assistant to the superintendent. Mrs. Carol Bjordahl was appointed the assistant superintendent of administrative services.
As you can see, it was a busy summer at PVSD! We had a successful and smooth opening to the school year due to the amazing staff members, Board of Education, and parents I am humbled to work alongside of.
